Why JewBelong?
“My Jewish journey began about 20 years ago when I learned (credit goes to my JewBelong Co-Founder, Archie) that all I needed to start was intention and curiosity. Little did I know back then that Hebrew school, challah, and belief in God were optional, and that Jewish values were inherently already mine. JewBelong was born out of the understanding that most Disconnected Jews (the group we lovingly call DJs at JewBelong) shared the same fears/misunderstandings that any of us do about not fitting in, being JewBarrassed, and so much more.”
Stacy’s Fill in the Blanks:
– Don’t judge, but The Moth Presents All These Wonders: True Stories About Facing the Unknown (great short stories!), notebook/pen, and a fan are on my nightstand.
– A talent I’d most like to have is singing or cooking.
– Bartender! Please make me a(n) Fleurdelisier in the backyard at Maison Premiere. Or a gin and tonic anywhere else.

Let’s talk Jewbelong!
Why JewBelong?
“Having grown up in a conservative Jewish household, my faith was always important to me. Shabbat dinner and Saturday mornings spent at synagogue were standard and from an early age, I recognized how important our Jewish community was. When I fell in love and had the honor of marrying my non-Jewish wife, I was petrified that we would be outcasts from this religion that I love so dearly. We both wanted to practice Judaism and raise our children the same way, yet finding an accepting community was hard. Experiences like ours are why JewBelong is so critical; so that interfaith couples, observant and non-observant Jews alike can celebrate this beautiful religion freely without fear of JewBarassment.”
Josh’s Fill in the Blanks:
– If I were on “America’s Got Talent,” I would play piano.

"On the eve of hosting my first formal Shabbat for my boyfriend's (now husband's) family, I realized I had no kiddush cup, candle sticks or challah cover. I ran over to a Judaica store a few blocks away and selected some beautiful things. As I was checking out, I was chatting with the lovely older woman (with more lipstick on her teeth than lips) and telling her all about the meal I was cooking for Shabbat. She looked at my items and exclaimed, "This is a Havdallah set! Don't you know?!" To which I responded that I was just toeing into Judaism and indeed, I did not know. She helped me find the right candlesticks for the occasion and we still use them on Friday nights."

The aftermath of Oct. 7 has been depressing and disheartening. I gained a new pride and perspective on my Jewish identity, but I also lost friends and have become alienated from many previous beliefs and perspectives. JewBelong confronts these issues - sometimes directly, sometimes through humor, sometimes with blunt, difficult truths. It's a great community for people who may feel they need a helping hand or a reminder that a little humor can go a long way in getting through even the most difficult times.

Why JewBelong?
This organization speaks truth to power through innovative, direct communication. JewBelong's brilliant innovation is two-fold: (a) to use a ubiquitous medium, long a place for banal sales pitches along highways and (b) to tell the truth of a situation in plain, direct language. Its messages--of pride in Judaism, of speaking boldly when our tiny size has often keep its communications subtle, of demanding fairness in unfair situations--are perfectly of the moment. And JewBelong speaks in the language of 21st century social media-- frank, quick-witted, at times necessarily acerbic, to the point--to command attention in an age when attention is impossible to retain.
