Matzah Dogs

Serves 12

15 minutes prep | 50 minutes baking

ingredients

  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups matzo or cake meal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 12 hot dogs, frozen

Recipe origin

Think of Matzah Dogs as the ultimate holiday-approved upgrade to your childhood favorite—corn dogs, but make them Pesach-friendly. Instead of a crispy cornmeal coating, we’re rolling hot dogs in a matzah meal batter, then baking them until golden and crunchy. The result? A satisfying, savory bite with just the right amount of crunch and nostalgia. Slather on some mustard, maybe a little ketchup (we won’t judge), and suddenly, Passover feels a whole lot more fun. Because who said eight days of matzah had to be boring?

step by step instructions

  1. Combine oil and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil
  2. Add dry ingredients and mix well, until mixture pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  3. Transfer mixture into a bowl.
  4. If you have a food processor, use the steel knife setting and process the mixture for five seconds. Add eggs one at a time through the feed tube while machine is running. Process 30 to 50 seconds longer, until smooth.
  5. If you are mixing by hand, beat the eggs before adding, and pour in as you mix.
  6. Mold the mixture around frozen hot dogs, oiling hands slightly for easier handlling.
  7. Place on a greased foil-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake at 375° F for 50 minutes
  9. Remove from oven and insert wooden skewers
